The Fabyan Windmill
by Pepa Quin

This project came out of a special show that my group, the Northern Illinois Lego Train Club, did for the Geneva History Center in Geneva, IL. With the town in its 150th year, the History Center asked us if we could build a number of creations based on historic buildings in the town. My pick was this old dutch windmill, known as the Fabyan Windmill.

Instead of being powered by wind, I had to resort to using a motor. It rests at the bottom of the windmill and powers the blades through an axle-shaft with a worm screw at the top. The windmill sees regular action at all of my shows, where it has resided in its temporary home of Mos Pepa.

I designed the windmill purely through the use of pictures both given by the history center and found on the net. After the first show was over, I had enough time left in the day to take the model over to the park where the actual windmill currently resides.

I learned there that some of my pictures were pretty old - apparently the white 'cross' in the middle, a bracing for the blades, was replaced by a much stronger iron bracket sometime ago. Ah, well.
