Samus Aran is the star of the Metroid series of games from Nintendo. As a bounty hunter, she fights to rid the galaxy of the dangerous Metroid species. I decided to build her shortly after completing Metroid Prime 3.
The Varia suit was built in September 2007. Years ago, when I made my first figure (Taki), I settled on an exact scale to build in - 1/5th human size. With Samus, that probed to be a bit of a problem due to her height (6'3") and the huge shoulder pads. The Varia suit Samus therefore cannot stand on her own except for a very rigid position.
One year later, I decided to build Samus with her Zero suit outfit. This blue suit is what Samus wears under her Varia armor. Since they are the same person, I made sure to make the dimensions exact. All joints (neck, shoulders, knees, etc.) correspond exactly on both suits.
I built the diorama 'box' shortly after the Zero suit was finished. This does not directly relate to any particular setting in the games, although fans may recognize one of the signature circular doors on the side Metroids are kept in stasis on the floor above Samus, although the tanks are, as usual, not perfect. This scene was built to fit within a display window at my local Lego store (20"x14"x30"). It was on display from September to October of 2008.
One interesting thing about certain Lego colors is their ability to glow under blacklight. With this in mind, I purposely included several of these colors in this creation. The varia suit contains neon-green elements, and in the scene flames and deadly Phazon will light up.
